Speak with an advocate 24/7 for support or a medical exam
Call the HotlineNot Sure If What Happened "Counts"? Reach Out Anyway.
You don't need to have the right words for what happened to you, and you don't need to be certain it "counts" as sexual assault to reach out. Whether it happened last night, weeks ago, or years ago, you're welcome here. There's no expiration date on getting support, and no version of your story that's too small or too complicated to bring to us. All services are free and confidential.
You Are Always in Control
You never have to involve law enforcement to receive care from us and that choice is entirely yours, now or ever. You can choose a forensic exam to receive medical care and preserve options, and decide later whether to report. You can choose to report right away. Or you can choose not to report at all. Nothing about your access to support depends on which one you choose.
Sexual Assault Forensic Exams
If it has been fewer than 5 days since the assault, a forensic exam can be an important option even if you're not sure yet whether you want to report. Evidence collection is most effective within this window, so coming in as soon as you feel ready can help preserve the best possible documentation and support, whatever you decide to do with it later.
Exams are performed by certified Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs), specially trained to provide compassionate, trauma-informed care. An advocate will be by your side throughout, and you'll be asked for your consent at every stage. These services are available at no cost.
If it has been more than 5 days, you can still reach out. You're still welcome to receive medical care, treatment for any injuries, and connection to the same support and resources.
Why Consider an Exam?
Your physical health. Nurses provide comprehensive care after an assault, including testing and preventive treatment for STIs and pregnancy, along with identifying other health concerns and connecting you to follow-up care.
Your mental health. After your exam, you'll be connected to mental health resources, including free therapy and support groups at In Safe Company, to begin healing.
Your evidence, your choice. Nurses collect a sexual assault kit, gathering evidence that may be important if you choose to report. Reporting to police is optional if you're 18 or older. If you're unsure or not ready, In Safe Company will store your evidence indefinitely.
How to Get an Exam
Call our 24-hour Sexual Assault Hotline as soon as you're ready and we'll guide you through the process, whether that's an exam at our facility or elsewhere. The exam itself includes a private conversation about what happened, a physical exam, evidence collection, documentation of any injuries, preventive medication for STIs and pregnancy, and education on post-assault care. Every exam is conducted with compassion, privacy, and your comfort at the center of the process.
Support If You Choose to Report
If you do decide to report your experience to law enforcement, whether that's right away or down the road, you don't have to navigate the process alone. An In Safe Company advocate can be with you, helping you understand what to expect and making sure your voice is heard every step of the way.
