Frequently Asked Questions

What is Supervised Visitation?

Supervised visitation is a court-ordered arrangement or agreement between two parents that allows a parent and child to spend time together in a safe, neutral, and supportive environment. During each scheduled visit, a trained professional is present to observe and monitor the interaction while supporting the safety and well-being of the child.

What is a Supervised or Monitored Exchange?

A supervised exchange provides a safe, neutral setting for a child to transition between parents for off-site parenting time. Pick-up and drop-off times are staggered so you and your co-parent don't come into contact with one another. A staff member monitors the exchange itself, working to make the process as smooth and comfortable as possible for your child.

What does the visit supervisor or monitor actually do?

Monitors are present to support the physical and emotional well-being of the child during the visit/exchange. In most cases, they'll simply observe. A monitor will only intervene if it's necessary for a child's or parent's safety.

Are visits monitored or recorded by cameras?

Our center's rooms are monitored by trained staff members, not cameras.

What happens if the other parent doesn't return my child at the end of a scheduled exchange?

If the co-parent fails to return a child as required, Nia’s Place staff follow established safety protocols and contact law enforcement.

What if my child doesn't want to participate in a visit or exchange?

Your child's comfort and safety come first. If a child expresses reluctance, fear, or doesn't want to participate, they are never forced into a visit or exchange.

What do your services cost?

Nia's Place provides supervised visitation and safe exchange services completely free of charge.

How do I get a referral for services?

Families can be referred to Nia's Place through a court order, or through self-referral if both parents agree to supervision during visits or exchanges. You can also request supervised visits or exchanges yourself if you fear for your safety or your child's safety during these times.

If you'd like help understanding the legal process for requesting supervised visitation or exchange, call 404-370-7670 to speak with a legal advocate.
